Royal Gorge and SLPOA to Coordinate on Public Access Issues
by Bill Oudegeest

Since the sale of Royal Gorge SLPOA has maintained good relations with Royal Gorge Operations.

To keep good relations and improve communications I met recently (March 15) with Neil Erasmus, General Manager of Royal Gorge Operations. We both want to work together for the good of the community. We talked about a number of issues focusing mostly on access to public lands: the Forest Service meadow, Soda Springs Road on the way to the Cedars, and Pahatsi as it goes out of the subdivision to Kidd Lake and beyond.

Neil has no objection to people using the public access points and has instructed employees not to hinder people on public lands. He has even instructed employees to guide people so they know where the public roads are. He has ordered some new public access signs to better mark the County road to Kidd Lakes and beyond and has a number of signs on Soda Springs Rd. leading out of Serene Lakes. He also says he has instructed his people not to block public access points.

Mistakes happen, however, or at least misunderstandings, and he wants to work with the community. So he wants to hear about problems so he can resolve them.

That said, the Royal Gorge lands are private and controlled by Royal Gorge. Neil says "Poaching" is a problem and he talked about dog sledders (on Van Norden Meadow) and snowmobilers ruining groomed trails.

People may not use Royal Gorge trails or lands to get to the public roads without buying trail passes.

Neil indicated that the  local public can help by not accessing the trail system from other than designated access points. Once one set of tracks appears it will quickly be followed by other sets of tracks and soon the spot looks like an accepted access point. Then "poaching" follows.

We’ve agreed to work together and communicate often. Let’s see where this leads us. Look forward to a regular column in the SLPOA newsletter by Royal Gorge Operations.
