Tips- Dried-up Brown Sugar

Question:  Serene Lakes is extremely dry. How do I prevent brown sugar from getting hard and dry, and is there away to restore moisture in dried out brown sugar?
Answer: Brown sugar hardens because it absorbs moisture from the air around it. Brown sugar should be stored in an airtight bag or container. For added assurance that it will remain moist, you can add a small piece of apple, bread, or citrus rind. You can also break off a small piece of unglazed terra cotta tile. Soak it in water for 30-minutes, pat dry and place it in the container. You can also go to a kitchen store and get a fancy designed unglazed terra cotta tile specifically made to keep brown sugar moist.

If you have brown sugar that’s already hardened and you want to soften it, here’s a simple little trick: sprinkle a few drops of water on a chunk of the sugar, wrap in aluminum foil, and bake in a 300F oven for 5 minutes. This will restore the moisture.
