Summit SummitThe Donner Summit Area Association and the Serene Lakes Property Owners’ Association are convening a “Summit Summit” from 2-4 pm on Saturday, December 16th, 2006 at the Donner Trail School. We seek to form consensus among Donner Summit organizations regarding the future of long-term regional development planning. The Placer County General Plan has not been updated in over 18 years and the data for the previous update is over 20 years old. Much has changed in our region over that period and we feel that the time has come to update the General Plan. Citizen input is critical to the planning process, especially in our unique region which, as an outlier in both Nevada and Placer County, is often only an afterthought for busy county planners. We recognize that further growth and development is inevitable and we desire to influence that growth to assure the highest overall quality of life possible. The Summit Summit will start this process by providing a forum where we can meet each other, exchange views and establish formalized communication between our organizations. We have invited members of all regional homeowner groups, local businesses and developers, and representatives of both counties to the Summit. We plan to establish a steering committee to gather local survey and census data and formalize a relationship with the county planners and local developers. This initial meeting will be run by a professional coordinator who will help us develop a rough strategy and a timeline to measure our progress. Development is a long-term regional issue that crosses county lines. We must all work together as caretakers of this land to maintain the unique natural beauty and rugged mountain character of the area to assure that the Donner Summit remains a special place to live, work and visit.
